Long Live La Paloma

Published October 25, 2024

A new episode is coming Monday, October 28th, and we'll be discussing Witches by Brenda Lozano!

The Drink Pairing

The obvious choice for this book is the much beloved Paloma.

HOWEVER, Val wanted to shift us away from the summer vibes that this highball traditionally gives off and attempt to find something that still keeps us firmly planted in the autumnal zone that we're in this time of year (in as much as those of us still living in 90 degree areas can be anyway).

Enter the Sage & Ginger Paloma!

From the Foul - Mouth Gourmet, this cocktail incorporates the standard elements of grapefruit juice, tequila, and lime juice...but then it kicks it up a different notch with the addition of a cinnamon sage honey syrup + a ginger beer finish on the top.

The mocktail version of this stays the same, just skip the tequila!

Remember you can join the DWAN Book Club by signing up HERE and you'll give drink recipe cards like the ones below emailed to you before every episode!

Moreau's Magic

Published May 27, 2024

Time for some more book lover discussion over horror themed cocktails!

The book: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia  and the drink are down below!

Val was able to create a hybrid cocktail of her own and so we give you

The Moreau:

Toss ingredients in a shaker with ice and then strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a candied orange peel (optional)

Because this drink behaves so much like a more traditional Bee's Knees, the logical mocktail choice is something comparable to that flavor profile.

All The Bitter's Lavender Bee's Knees:

(which we've nicknamed Carlota Elixir because BOOK CLUB!)

What Is It About Scary Movies That Latinos Love So Much?

Published August 26, 2023

Why do horror films like ‘The Conjuring’ have particular appeal with Latinos?

It's probably a combination of things. From the story linked above: The $53.5 million opening for 2018’s “The Nun” was lifted by an audience that was 36 percent Latino. It went on to become the most successful film in the franchise. Similarly, Latino audiences showed up for 2017’s “Annabelle: Creation” (26 percent at opening) and the first “Conjuring” film (17 percent).

Catholic imagery and religious traditions coupled with the culture (Latin folklore on the whole is no stranger to ghosts) are certainly factors that can be a draw to the horror realm but as the story above also points out:

"...it’s not just horror films. The same report said that people of color accounted for the majority of ticket sales for six of the top 10 films in 2018 and nine of the top 10 films in 2019."
